"La mort, c’est le bonheur parfait!" jubile ma grand-mère fêtant ses 90 ans lors d'une farce macabre dont la famille a le secret.
Le bonheur semble parfait également dans ces images de 1943, tournées par elle et ses proches, réfugiés au Chambon-sur-Lignon. Comme si jouer et rire de la mort était le seul moyen d’en conjurer la hantise. Cette obsession muette, je l’emporte jusqu’à Bénarès, en Inde, où vivants et morts partagent le même territoire…
"Death is perfect happiness" rejoiced my grandmother when celebrating her 90th birthday on the occasion of one of those macabre farces that only her family could stage.
Happiness also seems perfect in the 1943 images shot by her and her relatives, refugees in Chambon-sur-Lignon.
As if being playful and laughing at death were the only way to exorcise the phantom.
It is this silent obsession that I brought with me to Benares, in India, where the living and the dead share the same territory.
